thoughts on revival

a few months ago i signed up for a class on route to finish my masters. the class was titled "american history of revivals." it was a one week intensive class in marion, indiana taught by dr. black. leading up to the class we read books, prepared an oral report.

a week or two before i left for the class, the senior pastor from fumc marion, iowa challenged the staff to start praying for revival. i thought it was interesting right before i leave for indiana that pastor mike would make this challenge. so the whole week i am in class i was trying to figure out how i could apply it to the church back home.

the week after i got back the staff, during a meeting which we meet the 1st and 3rd mondays of the month decided that the mondays we were not in staff meeting we would get together and pray for the church and the community. that week was also the national day of prayer and from that spun a prayer meeting every thursday.

today we decided to have three special prayer meetings during the summer months. we are still unsure of the outcome, but we are expecting God to move in a big way here in marion, ia and in the life of fumc marion. if you are reading this please pray a quick prayer for the life of our church and community.

Day 50/61

2 Thes 3:1-15

vs 1 "pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you."

vs 2-5 Lord will strengthen and protect. "may the Lord direct your heart into God's love and Christ perseverance."

vs 6-10 "keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching."
Follow our model. if you do not work you do not eat.

vs 11-15 if he will not follow "regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

Monday, May 24, 2010

Day 49/61

2 Thes 2:1-15

vs 1-4 Be careful what you believe. Deception will lead to destruction.

vs 5-12 Lies destroy lives.

vs 13-17 God wants all to be saved, He has planned on it. We can all share in the glory of Jesus Christ. Stand firm in the teachings of Christ. We should have eternal encouragement from this. This should strengthen you.

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Day 48/61

1 Thes 5:1-28

vs 1-3 We do not know when the Lord is coming back, but we know that he is coming.

vs 4-11 Do not belong to the darkness. Their is a lot of crap that will steer you away from Christ the Light. Instead be self controlled. Put on faith hope and love to protect you from attacks. Encourage one another and build each other up.

vs 12-15 live in peace. Be patient. Don't be vengeful. Be kind.

vs 16-18 "Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." This is something we are always learning in life. There will always be new circumstances and experiences but there will always be the same constant in God.

vs 19-22 Let the Holy Spirit do what is needed. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.

vs 23-24 Allow God to work in your life to set you apart.

vs 25-28 Pray.

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

day 47/61

1 Thes 4:1-18

vs 1-2 live in order to please God, continue to do more for Him.

vs 3-8 Be sanctified. You might ask what this means. It means for you to be holy and set apart from this world. It then commands you to avoid sexual immorality by controlling your body. God did not call us to be impure but live a holy life.

vs 9-12 you have been taught to love each other, but do more. May your daily life win the respect of outsiders.

vs 13-18 The coming of the Lord will happen. Prepare for it, live your life like it will happen tomorrow. Be concerned and share the Lord with others.

Monday, May 17, 2010

day 46/61

1 Thes 1:1-10

vs 1 greeting

vs 2-3 thanking the Thessalonians for praying for him. I like vs 3 a lot because "their work they do was produced by the faith that they had, the labor was prompted by love and endurance by hope." They did not do these things out of duty but out of desire and love. What produces your works? Do you serve because you feel like you should? Or do you genuinely love helping others see the love of Christ through your actions?

vs 4-10 the Holy Spirit will help bring the Gospel power. You do not need to always worry about how you say it. The nerves you feel will be strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit. Imitate the Lord. Because of your example your faith in God is being talked about in all kinds of different places. Your story is important. I love how they turned from idols to serve the true and living God.

Friday, May 14, 2010

day 45/61

Colossians 3:18-4:6

vs 18-21 This is the different relationship in the family. We all have our responsibilities to carry out in the relationship. They are not one sided, but work more as a team.

vs 22 Slaves, today this could be seen more as a worker and boss relationship.

vs 23-25 Whatever you do, do it for the Lord. Do it with all your heart.

4:1 Masters, treat your workers fair.

2-6 Devote yourself to prayer. Treat outsiders with grace, why would they ever come into the church if you are not loving them before hand.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

day 44/61

Colossians 2:6-23
If you noticed i am going back a chapter. I noticed I skipped a passage yesterday so i am going back to cover it.

vs 6-7 Paul is talking to believers, who have accepted Christ. He is encouraging them to continue living in him. Everything they do should be built on that premise as we grow and are strengthened we should be overwhelmed with thankfulness.

vs 8 be careful about what teaching you follow. it could lead you away from Christ without knowing the effect.

vs 9-12 Christ is God. And we are given power through Christ . We are raised through faith.

13-15 You are alive through Christ. It was His death and resurrection that you are able to live.

16-19 Do not let anyone judge you as you are on a journey towards Christ.

vs 20-23 Do not base your faith on human teaching but on what is eternal.

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Day 43/61

Colossians 3:5-17

vs 5-11 put to death the sinful desires that plague you. You walked in these ways in your old life, but now you must rid yourself. With your actions and your attitudes you are supposed to represent Christ. You are renewed in knowledge and in the image of your creator.

vs 12-14 the new creation looks like this: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Forgive as Christ forgave you.

vs 15-17 the peace of Christ should rule your hears. the Word of Christ should dwell in you. And everything you do should be in the name of the Lord.

Monday, May 10, 2010

Day 42/61

It has definitely been way to long since I have updated this page. We will be getting back on route to finish this study within the next month. One thing I want to say, even though I have not addressed this Bible study in a while does not mean I have been completely absent from reading scripture. Do not neglect the Word of God.

Colossians 1:15-23

The Supremacy of Christ
vs 15-20- Christ is the image of God. When it talks about image it is referring to the character and integrity of God, not the physical image. Christ created all things, visible and invisible, by Him and for Him. Everything revolves around Christ. He is the head of the church. He is supreme above all things. Through sin (fall of Adam and Eve) we were separated from God. But it was through Christ and His sacrifice on the cross that reconciled us with Him.

vs 21-23 Christ's death was not in vain. It was done to present us as holy, without blemish and free from accusation. Stand firm in the gospel.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Day 41/61

Philippians 4:10-23

vs 10-13 Paul rejoices greatly in the Lord because he has learned to be content in all circumstances. Whether lacking or in plenty, whether hungry or full, he can do "all things through Chris who strengthens me." But it is only because of the strength Christ gives him. Paul can accomplish nothing on his own.

vs 14-19 Paul shows his thanks for the Philippians for being the first church to give to him and the ministry and reassures them that God will meet their needs.

vs 20 Amen

vs 21-23 closing of the letter to Philippi.

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Day 40/61

Philippians 3:17-4:9

vs 17-21 Join together in following this example. Take notes from others you see living this example. Be careful who you are following. They may only have earthly matters on their mind. It is God who will transform us to be like Him.

4:1 Stand firm in the Lord

vs 2-3 we work together in the cause of Christ.

vs 4-7 Rejoice in the Lord! Rejoice in the Lord! Paul said it twice so I thought I should. Repetition is used for a reason.Paul wants you to remember this. Be gentle. Do not be anxious.

vs 8 "Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy, think about these things."

vs 9 put these things into practice.

Monday, April 19, 2010

Day 39/61

Philippians 3:1-16

vs 1-Rejoice.

vs 2-6 Do not put confidence in the flesh. Rather put it in Christ.

vs 7-10 Every thing is a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus as Lord. Everything is considered rubbish/ garbage compared to knowing Christ.

vs 11 "I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection."

vs 12-16 We press on to the goal of perfection. So I forget about what is behind and strain to what is ahead.

Friday, April 16, 2010

Day 38/61

Phil 1:27-2:18

vs 27-30 conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

2:1-11 Quite possible my favorite scripture ever.

2:1-4 be like minded with Christ. Have the same love, spirit and purpose. Do not be selfish, be humble. Look to the interests of others.

vs 5 Attitude should be the same as Jesus Christ.

Explanation of Jesus attitude
vs 6 Jesus did not consider himself equal to God.
vs 7 made himself nothing (lowered, humbled)
nature of a servant (washing disciples feet)
human likeness (came from heaven to be like us)
vs 8 obedient to the point of death (not my will but yours)

Reward for Christ's attitude
vs 9 God exalted him to the highest place, name above every name.
vs 10 every one will bow to Christ
vs 11 every tongue will confess

vs 12-13 Work out your salvation- God will work in you.
vs 14-18 Do not complain, so that you will become blameless and pure.
May my life be an offering

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Day 37/61

Phil 1:3-26

vs 3-11 Here you can see Paul is fond of the Philippians. He encourages them in their walk with Christ. He then prays for them. Their knowledge and insight will grow so they will be able to discern the will of God.

vs 12-14 He is writing to them from prison. But he is still encouraged because he gets to share Christ with every one in prison, and other people have stepped up to take his place to speak the Word of God.

vs 15-18 Christ needs to be preached.

vs 19-26 Paul has reached a point in his where his life he has given everything up to preach the gospel. It might mean his life but he is okay with it, because he knows he has lived the way God wanted him to. "To live is Christ and to die is gain."

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Day 36/ 61

Ephesians 6:10-20

There are many things in the world trying to destroy our relationship with Christ. This is why we have an armor to put on to help protect us from these dangers.

vs 10-13 Be strong, put on the armor of God.

vs 14-17 Belt of truth- Stand firm in the truth, the word of God
Breastplate of righteousness- following God with right decisions
Shoes of Peace- take you to the right places
Shield of faith- to help protect you
helmet of salvation- proclaim what Christ has done in your life
sword of the Spirit- Word of God

vs 18-20 Prayer is what we need to lean on in good and bad times. Remember to pray for me.

Monday, April 12, 2010

Day 35/61

Ephesians 5:21-6:9

vs 22-24 this discusses the different relationship with the husband and the wife and Christ and the church.

vs 25-33 husbands need to love their wives as Christ loves the church. Christ sacrificed everything as we should as well. present your wife in a loving and honoring way.

6:1-3 Children, obey and honor your parents. Do this and you may enjoy long life on the earth.

vs 4 Parents love your children. Bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

vs 5-9 Slaves/ employees, Obey, work, serve, whole whole heart. Masters/ bosses treat them in the same way.

Friday, April 9, 2010

Reading 35/61

Ephesians 5:1-20

vs 1-2 imitate God as children do there parents. If you follow what God does you will definitely be headed in the right direction. Love as Christ loved. He gave himself up for a sacrifice.

vs 3-7 As God's chosen and holy people we need to live above reproach. We need to be pure and sexually moral. Live without greed. There should not be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking. Instead be thankful. None of this has a place in the kingdom of God.

vs 8-14 live in the light, rid self of darkness. The darkness will eventually be exposed by the light.

vs 15-18 Make the most of your life and live in the wisdom of God. Find out what the Lord's will is. Fill yourself with God's Spirit rather then the things of the world where you are trying to find fulfillment.

vs 19-20 Use different ways to worship the Lord always giving thanks to him.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Day 34/61

Ephesians 4:1-16

You might notice an extra day in the title. I added it because I could not imagine skipping over this chapter.

vs 1-6 Live a worthy life; be humble, patient, bearing with one another in love. Keep united through peace.

We are one body, with one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism

vs 7-8 God has given each of us grace.

vs 9-13 We are all called to something. As we make God the Lord of our lives he will reveal to us His plans for us.

vs 14-16 We need to stand strong to faith. Not believing what ever deceitful teaching that might come our way. Christ supports the whole body as each part does its work.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

Day 33/60

Ephesians 1:15-2:10

vs 15-18 I give thanks and pray for you. I want you to know God better.

vs 19-23 God's power is great. He is in control. The church is His body (the fullness of him.)

2:1-10 You were dead in sin, at one time we were all there. But because of God's love and mercy, He made us alive with Christ. This salvation came through grace. This is a gift from God, not by works, yet we were created to do good works.

Monday, April 5, 2010

Day 32/60

Ephesians 1:3-14

vs 3-6 Praise God for His blessing, holiness and love. He has given us all salvation.

vs 7-10 Redemption, forgiveness and grace have been given to us freely.

vs 11-14 We were chosen for this gift for His will to be done. We were all included in this gift of salvation offered to us.

Monday, March 29, 2010

Day 31/60

Galatians 6:1-10

vs 1-5 Help a brother who is in sin. Be careful not to fall into temptation as well. Do not think of yourself as more then you are.

vs 6 Share the good things that you are learning.

vs 7-10 For each action there is a reaction. What effort you put into something there will be that return. What you plant, and work the soil, it will benefit you in the long term with a good harvest.
When an opportunity presents itself, do good to all.

Friday, March 26, 2010

Day 30/60

This makes me half way through this bible challenge. It is taking me a lot longer then I should. I hope you guys are doing well too.

Galatians 5

vs 1 So many people burden themselves with things that we have no control. Do not be a slave to these things seek help from others and hand over your problems to God.

vs 2-6 the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. You do not need to perform a ritual to make yourself okay with God. It is about faith and love.

vs 7-8 What happened to you that took your eyes off the truth?

vs 9-12 Be careful what is taking you over. A small amount of yeast has a great affect on bread, just like people can have on your life.

vs 13-15 live in freedom. This is what we were called to be. But do not use your freedom to fall into temptation. Rather serve people in love. The law can be summed up in loving your neighbor. Do not tear each other up.

vs 16-18 Live by the Spirit and not your own sinful desire.

vs 19-21 Sinful nature- sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfishness, dissension, factions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, etc
-----Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God---------

vs 22-23 Fruit of the Spirit
1. love
2. joy
3. peace
4. patience
5. kindness
6. goodness
7. faithfulness
8. gentleness
9. self control
live by these things

vs 24-25 kill the sinful nature, live by the Spirit. Walk the walk.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Day 29/60

Galatians 3:19-4:7

vs 19-22 The law was added because of transgressions until the Seed arrived. (The Seed here is a reference to Christ.) The whole world is a prisoner to sin, and to become free from this sin is to have faith in Christ.

vs 23-25 This law was supposed to lead us to Christ, so we could be free through faith.

vs 26-29 It does not matter where you have come from, what your past is, but through faith we are all heirs to God's kingdom.

4:1-2 We are able to own all that God has to offer. Even though we give up all of ourselves to follow Christ.

vs 3-7 God sent us his Son to redeem us, who are under the law. So we could be full heirs. So you are no longer a slave but a son or daughter of God.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Day 28/60

Galatians 2:11-21

vs 11-13 Paul is adamant about Peter being a hypocrite. He lived one way with some people and a different way with others.

vs 14-16 He asks Peter how he forces the Gentiles to live like Jews when Peter who is Jewish lives like a Gentile. How can you teach others to live this way, when you yourself do not? A man is justified by faith.

vs 17-21 It is all about a life lived after God. We sacrifice ourselves to allow Christ to live in and through us. We need God's grace.

Monday, March 22, 2010

day 27/60

2 Cor 8:1-15

vs 1-7 The generosity of the Macedonian church is referred to in this passage. They are so joyful about the grace they have received that there reaction is to give, even if they do not have much. They gave themselves first to God. Excel in faith, knowledge and love but especially in giving. Generosity truly shows a persons heart.

vs 8-12 Give according to what you have, not to what others are giving or what you do not have.

vs 13-15 Some people have extra, others are in need. You should want to help allow every one to have his or her needs met. We all need to give to show the love of God.

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Day 26/60

2 Cor 6:14-7:1

vs 14-16 Do not be yoked with unbelievers. There should be nothing in common that we have enough to consider to date or marry. There is no reason for missionary dating or marrying. There is no promise that you will be able to make your beliefs their beliefs. And it will only bring issues among morality. values and convictions in the home.

vs 17-7:1 Set apart yourself for the things of God. This does not mean we cannot be around but to date and marry someone who should be so much different then ourselves is not God's plan for us. We do this for our God.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Day 25/60

2 Cor 5-6:2

vs 1-5 Take off what is mortal and cling to what is eternal.

vs 6-10 Live by faith, not by sight. Things are not always what you see, yet faith is something we cling to and hope for. We make it our goal to please God. We will all face judgement one day.

vs 11-15 Christ love compels us to no longer live our own live but we give our own lives as a sacrifice.

vs 16-21 If we are in Christ we are a new creation. We are different people. We have died to ourselves and now live for Christ's sake. Because of Christ's sacrifice we are able to become righteous.

6:1-2 God's grace is amazing and the time of salvation is now.

Monday, March 15, 2010

Day 24/60

2 Cor 4

vs 1-5 We are servants of Christ, and I must prove faithful. It is a small thing if I am judged by you. My conscience is clear. And only the Lord judges me. The Lord will bring to light and expose our hearts.

vs 6-7 Do not take pride in man. We are full of faults.

vs 8-13 He builds up the Corinthians and tears down  self. Obviously the Corinthians are becoming prideful. He is showing how he is nothing without Christ. He refers to himself as the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

14-17 I am not trying to shame you, rather take it as a warning. I am sending Timothy to help lead you. He will help remind you the way of Christ.

vs 18-21 I will try to come as soon as I can.

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Day 23/60

2 Cor. 1:15- 2:11

vs 15-17 Paul is explaining why he was not able to come to Corinth again.

vs 18-22 Our ministry to Christ is always a yes.  If we follow through with this Christ "will put his Spirit in our hearts. as a deposit."

vs 23-24 by faith you stand firm.

2:1-4 I did not want to cause grief.

vs 5-11 Stand the test and be obedient in everything.

Day 22/60

2 Cor. 1:3-14

vs 3-7 God comforts us in any time of trouble and suffering.

vs 8-11 Life was difficult for Paul and his ministry in Asia. However he leaned on God and was able to get through it.

vs 12-14 Paul is confident that he is conducting himself in the way he needs of holiness and sincerity from God.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Day 21/60

1 Cor 15:1-28

vs 1-2 Continue to believe in the gospel.

vs 3-8 Essential beliefs of the gospel.
1. Christ died for our sins
2. buried
3. raised on the 3rd day
4. appeared to the disciples and 500 others, and me.

vs 9-11 Paul does not feel worthy but knows he has God given grace to be with him.

vs 12-19 the resurrection of Christ is essential to our faith. here the people of Corinth were having a hard time believing this.

vs 20-28 It was because of Adam that all men will die, but is from Christ that all men will be made alive again. The least enemy to be destroyed is death. We will be raised again. Glory to God for all that He is able to accomplish.

Friday, March 5, 2010

Day 20/60

1 Cor 13

Known as the Love chapter, read at almost every wedding. But we should not look at it as just a human love but of the idea that GOD IS LOVE (1 John 4

vs 1-3 Love is of utmost importance. We need and thrive off of love. If we do not have love, we are nothing!

vs 4-7 What love is.

vs 8-10 Love never fails. When perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. We are measured by our love, for God and others.

vs 11-12 Growth and maturity comes as we learn to love God and others.

vs 13 Out of faith, hope and love, the greatest is love.

Day 19/60

1 Cor 12

vs 1-6 There are different gifts but all given from the same source. God will lead us all to how we can serve.

vs 7-11 these are different gifts
1. wisdom
2. knowledge
3. faith
4. healing
5. miraculous powers
6. prophecy
7. discernment
8. speaking in tongues
9. interpretation of tongues

vs 12-13 One body, different parts

vs 14-26 All have there place.  Don't try to be in other places but the place that God has gifted you. It is then up to us to use these gifts together to serve the whole body. We rejoice together and suffer together.

vs 27-31 All of us together are the body of Christ.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Day 18/60

1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13

vs 19-23 I have become all this to all men so that by all means I might save some. This is everything for someone who is witnessing. It does not mean that your go against God and his commands but that you become part of their lives doing anything and everything possible to win them over.

vs 24-27 We do this to win the prize, like a fighter or or runner who trains and kills his body to become the champion we do the same so that we might get a crown that will last forever. It is not a sprint but a marathon, it is not a short fight but going long and deep and we do what we must to beat in order to do what God asks us to do.

10:1-10 We all follow Christ just like our forefathers. There are a lot of do nots in this section
1. do not be idolaters
2. do not commit sexual immorality
3. do not test the Lord
4. do not grumble

vs 11-13 Take warning, be careful of temptation. God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. We all have a choice. And if we fall into that temptation it is about our flaw and not God. God knows we are able to get through it, but we need to trust in God.

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Day 17/60

1 Corinthians 7:25-40

This is an interesting passage for me to write on. It is normal for us to get married when you are in love and be able to do both. Obviously you can see how Paul feels on this subject. And since I am married you know how I feel on the matter. I will just write on what I feel Paul is trying to say to you and the Corinthians on this subject.

vs 25-31 It is not a sin to marry or to stay unmarried. There will be a lot less troubles for you if you remain unmarried.

vs 32-35 A married man has divided concerns, his God and his wife. It is hard to balance both.

vs 36-38 There is no right or wrong in what you decide to do with staying single or deciding to be married.

vs 39-40 Paul thinks the person who is happy should stay where they are at in life. Do not try to add more, to see if it works.

Monday, March 1, 2010

Day 16/40

1 Cor 7:1-24

vs 1-9 Paul here challenges those who can fight off the temptations of passion not to marry. But if you are not able to fight of the challenges of lust then to get married so that you can be one, belonging to each other.

vs 10-16 Anyone who does become married should not separate or divorce. However if one is a believer and the other is not, and the unbeliever leaves  let him do so. It is not your place to force a relationship in this way.

vs 17-24 Each person should remain in the position of when God called him. You are in a specific place for a specific ministry. This is the same with marriage, or even a position. However God never leaves us in the same place. He always calls for growth in our lives.

Friday, February 26, 2010

Day 15/60

1 Cor 3:1-23

vs 1-4 Christians have a process of maturity. Here it is compared to a baby going from milk to solid food. When we become Christians there should be a growth process. Unfortunately here Paul is still seeing jealousy and fighting. They are not seeing that Christ is the one to follow rather then the ones that told them about Christ.

vs 5-9 The first part gives the analogy of a farmer. Paul planted the seed, Apollos watered it and God made it grow. Pastor Mike and I as well as your life coaches,  do all the planting and watering we can so that you will come to a maturity in Christ. Only God will make things grow, with your cooperation. You should want to grow in Him. If you dedicate yourself to what God wants in your life to read the Word, to pray and to listen to the Spirit each day. This is the part that you have.

vs 10-15 The next part gives the analogy of a builder. One started the foundation and the other is building something upon it. The foundation is Jesus Christ. Ones work will be seen for the effort and the material put into it.

vs 16-17 You are God's temple. God's temple is sacred. You are sacred Do not destroy that.

vs 18-23 Do not think of yourself higher then you ought. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. So do not boast about your self but in the work of the Lord.

Day 14/60

1 Corinthians 2

vs 1-5 Paul is really humble here to show that compared to the power of the Spirit, he is nothing. He is not wise or a good speaker. Even though Paul feels like this he allowed the Spirit to use him. He made himself available in service.

vs 6-9 The wisdom that Paul speaks of is given by the Spirit. It comes with the maturity and growth that one has in Christ. No one can conceive the magnificence of God and what He has prepared for us.

vs 10-16 No one knows what goes on in the mind of the Lord, except His Spirit. So try to listen to the truth of God through His Word and Spirit.

Day 13/60

1 Corinthians 1:10-31

vs 10-17 There seems to be division in the church. People are starting to follow the people that God sends to them rather then God, himself. Paul makes a good point that he does not baptize in the name of Paul but rather the few baptism that he has done has been in the name of God.

vs 18  The message of the cross is different for the two sides. to some it is foolishness. For those who are being saved it is the very power of God.

vs 19-25 Many men think they are wise but even the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom. God can use every part of ourselves if we offer it to him because the power of God comes out through our weakness.

vs 26-31 Think of where God has brought you from. His power has brought you from where you were to where you are today. This is why we do not boast in ourselves but in the Lord. We are nothing without the power of our God.

I really like this chapter. It is humbling to think that I am only at where I am today because of the power of God in my life. We need to celebrate more about what God has done in our lives so glory can be brought to Him.

Day 12/60

Romans 14:1-15:6

vs 1-4 Do not judge a man based on his own convictions. If one tries to stick to following rules in order to live out his faith, it is that mans own convictions that allow him to do so.

vs 5-8 One man might pick a specific day to keep holy another will consider them all similar. Either way do not live for yourself but for the Lord and do not get argumentative about how one observes the rule.

vs 9-11 Do not judge.

vs 12-15 Each one will be judged before God. This is not our place. If someone has their convictions and you have yours do them unto the Lord.

vs 16-18 "Anyone who serves Christ is pleasing to God."

vs 19-21 Do not get worked up, let us live a life of peace. Do not allow yourself to cause another person to stumble .

vs 22-23 "Everything that does not come from faith is sin."

Ch 15:1-4  Help those who are weak. Build them up.  Everything that has been written has been done to help teach us and to give us hope.

vs 5-6 All these things are done so we can be brought together in unity.

Monday, February 22, 2010

Day 11/60

Romans 13

vs 1-5 Submit to governing authorities. This is a little easier said then done some of the times. A lot of laws are similar to what God has asked of us. He does not want us to steal, however the only difference with government than God is that the punishment is served out during our lifetime. And with God their is room for forgiveness if one seeks it.  When one rebels against the authorities, they are also rebelling against God. God has established the authority.

The interesting thing about this statement is that Paul had a few jail stints. But the reason he was in jail was not for breaking God's laws but because he was spreading the love of God. So in order to do what God asked him to do, he had to take chances. So learn to follow the heart of God. Discern how He wants you to live.

vs 6-7 No one likes taxes, but we all have to pay them. Give what you they ask of you. While it is not easy there are many services that we would not be able to have without taxes. Police Dept, Fire Dept, School systems, services everyone need.  Not only do we honor God through this bu by giving people respect  and honor is important as well.

vs 8-10  Those who love have fulfilled the law. The ten commandments narrow down to the greatest commandments of love God and love neighbor.

vs 11-14 It is time to wake up!  Realize how you are living and turn away from sin. Follow Christ, Clothe yourself with Christ. If you clothe yourself, it always goes with you wherever you go.

Friday, February 19, 2010

Day 10/60

Romans 12

This is one of my favorite chapters.

vs 1-2 Offer your bodies as living sacrifices. You are alive yet you offer your body out of love to be used for Christ. This is what we do in worship. Worship is not just singing songs, it is so much more then that. Worship is how we live our lives. Be transformed, so you can live out what God's will is in your life. Stay attuned to what He wants from you.

vs 3-8 Do not think of yourselves so highly. In the world we live in this is difficult because we can custom everything to our needs, we can broadcast ourselves online with facebook, youtube and more. But is is not about ourselves receiving the acknowledgment, rather then allowing the body to work together as one. We each have different parts sharing in the body of Christ. Allow each to use their gifts that have been given to them for the use of the community.

vs 9-13 Be loving, devoted, honor one another above yourself, be zealous always, be joyful, patient, faithful, generous,  hospitable.

vs 14-16 Bless your persecutors, do not curse (bring harm), rejoice and mourn with those who do the same. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, conceited or stuck up.

vs 17-21 Do right, live peacefully, do not take revenge. Vengeance is only the Lord's to have. Feed and give drink to your enemy, this will make him feel weird. Overcome evil with good.

9/60

Romans 10

vs 1-4 This is a great prayer for anyone to have, that they may be saved. He picks a flaw in them that he sees their zeal is not based on knowledge. They tried to do things on their own rather then relying on what God can give them. Only Christ allows them to have righteousness.

vs 5-13 If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth, will be saved. It takes more then faith. It is an outward confession. A response  from ourselves on who God is and how it changes us.
--from the heart comes believe and are justified.
--from your mouth that you confess and are saved.
"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

vs 14-21 How can someone know about Christ without us bringing to them the new either from our mouths or God's word.  So anyone who brings the Good News to others is awesome.  Faith comes from hearing the message.
Different messages
1. Words of Christ- Words to the end of the world
2. Moses- envious by those who are not a nation
3. Isaiah- found by those who did not seek

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Day 8/60

Romans 8: 18-39

vs 18 This is a powerful statement. I am sure that some of you are going through something that makes it seem like you life just cannot get any worse. But God has so much more planned for you then the temporary pain and suffering. Imagine how you will feel when you get through this, overcome it and then how God can use you because of the strength and confidence you received when he helped you get through it.

vs 19-21 No one was created to stay where they are at. Whether good times or bad, there will always be need for growth to become more like Christ. We were not meant to stay in this bondage but to be set free.

vs 22-27 What a statement of hope. We cannot  for what we already have. We have the Spirit in us to bring us to where He wants us to be.  So we hope patiently for what God has promised. When we are weak, we allow the Spirit to work in us. At times when we have not words and do not know how to go on the Spirit intercedes for us.

vs 28 "God works for the good of those who love Him."

vs 29-30 Gods plan for us.
1. conform to the likeness of his son.
2. called, justified, glorified.

vs 31 "If God is for us, who can be against us."

vs 32-34 God gave His Son as a sacrifice for us. So why wouldn't he give us anything else we need?

vs 36-38 Because of Christ we are conquerers.

vs 35, 39 Nothing will separate us from the love of Christ, if we love Him.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Day 7/60

Romans 7:1-25

vs 1-6 Death breaks one from the law. The example given here is marriage. So when we received new life it allowed us to bear fruit, and to serve in a new way of the Spirit.

vs 7-12 The law is holy, righteous and good, and apart from law sin is dead.

vs 13 Sin produces death.

vs 14-20 We do not understand what we do at times. "What I want to do I do not do, but what I hate to do." It is a struggle, it becomes the sin living in us. The sinful nature compels us, drives us to this.

vs 21-25 The self is at war with itself. We delight to follow God's law but struggle and wrestle with ourselves. Only God, through Jesus Christ will be able to deliver us in this.

Challenge you to read Romans 8:1-17 and see how we can have this life.

Monday, February 15, 2010

Day 6/60

vs 1-4 Many people stay in sin because they think it is a trap, that we are human and we will always fail. However this is not true. We are to in cooperation with Christ live an abundant life (John 10:10). What is an abundant life? It is a life totally devoted to God, relying on His grace in times but moving forward to become more like Christ.  This is why we were baptized. As Christians we are to die to sin, and are born into a new life.

vs 5-7 It is  the baptism that shows we are united with Christ. We die as we are laid back in the water. We are cleansed, and we raise again as we are brought to new life.

8-14 Now it is time to live  together for Christ. Since Christ already battled death and won it is impossible for Him to die. In the same way our old selves have died and we are now alive in Christ. So do not offer your bodies to sin, but rather to God. Sin will not be our master.

15- 18 For the second time Paul asks if we should sin because we are under the grace of God rather then the law? His answer, no. We are no longer slaves to sin. Who or what do we obey. Whatever we obey, we are slaves to. We have been set free from sin.

19-23 The benefit of becoming a slave to righteousness and God, leads us towards holiness and eternal life. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life."

Friday, February 12, 2010

Day 5/60

Roman 5:12-21

vs 12-14 Sin affects us all. We are all held accountable for the law.

vs 15-19  Just as Adam's sin affected all. Jesus' grace affects us all. Able to cancel out the sin if we follow Christ in faith. How much better is the second gift!

vs 20-21 Where there is sin, their can also be forgiveness, and where there is forgiveness there is eternal life.

Day 4/60

Romans 4

vs 1-3 Not justified by works, this would give us the credit for everything we do. Yet we are righteous only by faith.

vs 4-6 Just as someone who works receives a paycheck, one who trusts God his faith is built up.

vs 7-8 Those who have belief, who trust and follow God will not have their sins count against them.

vs 9-12 Righteousness is credited with faith and not a religious ritual.

vs 13-17 God promised Abraham, but Abraham's part is to live in faith.

vs 18-25 Abraham lived in faith, God strengthened his faith through crediting him righteousness. This same promise can be for us as well.

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Day 3/60

vs 21-26 Righteousness comes through faith in Christ to all who believe. We all need this because we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We are justified by his grace. Justified is a forgiveness that brings us to a place of total peace with God. We are able to have this because of the sacrifice Christ made for us. It mentions it was an atonement. This is what makes us one with Jesus. We are able to be justified because of his atonement of our sins. He did this to make things right, because God knew we were not able to achieve it on our own. So he did it for us.

vs 27-31 This does not change the old law but rather builds it up through the faith of all persons whether Jewish or Gentile. Gentile is a word use for anyone who is not Jewish. So I am considered a Gentile as are the majority of you.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Day 2/60

vs 1-4 Why do you condemn/judge the people of things that you are guilty of as well? It is not our place as man to judge anyway.  God's kindness is what leads us to repentance. His kindness brings us forgiveness and we turn away from our past to live for Christ.

vs 5-11 Don't let stubbornness get in the way of repentance. Humble yourself to reveal yourself in the wrong. Seek the glory and honor of God. Reject the evil that separates us from God. It is not worth the trouble to follow evil. It will only bring distress to you and the ones around you.

vs 12-16 Only those who obey the law will be seen as righteous in God's eyes. It is not enough to read it like you are doing now. It is not enough to hear it at church and youth group. Yet it is something that is supposed to be lived out and applied to your life.

New Challenge- 60 Days w/ Paul... Day 1

Most of these passages are shorter then what we read each day in the Gospels but Romans is packed with so much truth that I will walk through and help you understand a little about what Paul was talking about.

vs 16-17  The gospel is something he was not ashamed about and is willing to do anything for it. He knows that the gospel story brings the power of God through salvation for anyone who believes. In the gospel God includes the right living that we need in our lives and shows us how to live by faith.

vs 18-20  God shows us how we should live whether through Scripture or Spirit so we are without excuse of being able to know how to live for him. Make sure you fall on the side of God!

vs 21-23 Many people claim to know God but do not follow His ways. This is the important part of being the church. We need to live it out.  We need to be careful how we think, and protect our hearts from the darkness. So many times we choose the mortal (things that will die, have an end) rather then focusing on the one who had not beginning and will have no end.

vs 24-25 How many times have we traded God for what seems convenient. Are we living our lives in a way that is honoring God out of our convictions or are we living in a way that is convenient for us and changing our beliefs because it seems like an easier way to live. Do not exchange the truth for lies or convenience.

vs 26-27 This is one of those specific ways of life that is addressed in scripture that many people dance around because it offends some people. "Men abandoned natural relations with women and inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent act with other men."
With this verse I first want to say that as a Christian we should never treat any person differently because of their beliefs. We do believe that homosexuality is a sin and as you can read in this verse that it is an unnatural way. So how do we address it in the church. We need to accept anyone and everyone. We are all broken, each in our own way. We need to fight the temptations that we have to live the way that God expects us to live. Continue to "Love God and Love Neighbor. Give people grace, compassion and treat them the way that you would want to be treated.

vs 28-32 You will have to choose for yourself how you will use the truth you know. Will you obey it and live a fruitful life, or disregard it and live against God's plans for you?

Day 30

We are finally here. The end of the first 30 day challenge. How do you think you did? Was it worth it? What did you learn. How has your life changed. Remember it is one thing to learn something but completely different to apply it to your life. I hope the second is true.

I will be starting in on the next challenge starting Monday. This is when we will start a 60 day challenge reading through a lot of the epistles. The epistles are the books written by Paul. I hope you guys continue on in this to challenge yourself to become more like Christ in the process.

vs 1-12 One thing you have to remember is that the guards have been here this whole time. Yet when  the woman arrive the stone was rolled away and there was nobody in the tomb. Jesus was nowhere to be found.  Two angels appeared to them and tell them "Jesus is not here; He is risen. Remember he told you this was going to happen. They went and told all these things to the 11 disciples and no one believed them. But Peter ran to the tomb to see for himself.

vs 13-49 Jesus appears to the
1. Two of the disciples were down and tell Him about what happened, they did not recognize Jesus. It wasnt until he broke the bread and gave it to them when they realized it was the Christ.
2. Appears to the rest of the disciples, saying "Peace be with you." The look like they just saw a ghost. He eats with them. And tells them they are all witnesses and to share it with the world.

vs 50-53 Jesus taken up to heaven.

The death and resurrection of Christ is the foundation of our belief. We must believe this. It is imperative. This is supposed  to encourage and challenge us to live out our faith. In Luke he appeared to 12 people. But in John 20 he appears to Mary Magdalene. In Acts 1, it says he was on earth for a period of forty days. In all Jesus revealed himself to over 500 witnesses. How much proof do you need to know this is real?

Day 29

Matthew 27
This is when the Bible for me starts to look like the Passion movie. For those who have seen it know what I am talking about. I am very visual so when I read this I picture what takes place in the movie.

vs 1-10 Judas starts to feel guilty about what he had done. He goes to return the coins to the chief priests. But of course they do not care, rejected him. Judas leaves and goes to hang himself.

vs 11-26 Jesus goes on trial before Pilate. Pilate gives the crowd an option of which prisoner they would like released. This is something that happens every year at this time. I think Pilate thought that they would release Jesus but it backfired on him and they asked to release Barabbas. Barabbas was the worst of the worst.

Pilate's wife warns him not to do anything with Jesus, he is innocent. So he is passive and decides to ask the crowd what they want to do with Jesus. The crowd replies crucify him. The crowd was starting to revolt. Since Pilate did not want riots to ensue he released Jesus to the crowd and wiped his hands of any responsibility.

vs 27-31 This is when it starts to get really crazy, soldiers mock Jesus.
1. Stripped him of his clothes.
2. Put a scarlet robe on him.
3. Twisted a crown of thorns and set it into his head.
4. Put a staff in his right hand.
5. Bowed down before him.
They mocked Jesus because he claimed to be king. So they dressed him up like a king with a robe and a crown.
6. Spit on him.
7. Led him away to crucify him.

vs 32-44 Jesus needed help carrying the cross. So the soldiers forced a man named Simon to do it.  They divided up his clothing by gambling for it.

"He saved others but cant save himself."  Hurling the worst insults possible. This is not normal. No one can continue in these circumstances. Especially when Jesus has all the power to stop it at any time. He continued to say. "Not my will but yours be done." He gave up everything, including his own life. He did this act to save us from our selves and our selfish sins.

vs 45-56 At the darkest point of his life. "He says, God, why have you forsaken me?"  Jesus dies. At this the curtain in the temple was torn. This curtain was the passage way into the Holy of Holies, which is the very presence of God himself.  Only priests were allowed in there to do the priestly duties of sacrifice being the representation of the Jewish people. If the priest were not pure when he entered he would die. Because only pure people could enter into the presence of God and live to tell about it. But with the ripping of the curtain it showed a new start. All people could now be in the presence of God. They did not need a priest to represent them any longer. God would now be able to connect with us at all times. What an awesome story.

vs 57-61 Joseph of Arimathea buries Jesus in a tomb.

vs 62-66 Guards make plans to guard the tomb of Jesus so the disciples cant come and steal the body of Jesus to proclaim that he rose again.

Day 28

Luke 22

vs 1-6 Judas after being taken over by Satan agrees to betray Jesus.

vs 7-38 Jesus asks them to go prepare Passover. Passover for someone who is Jewish is like a U.S. citizen  celebrating the 4th of July. Passover was celebrated to commemorate being freed from slavery in Egypt. Specifically what made Pharaoh release the slaves at first, when whoever did not make a sacrifice and paint the top of their doors with the blood of a lamb, would lose their first born son.

This was Jesus last passover, this is the story where we have adopted the sacrament of communion. This is when we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. We take the bread and eat because the bread represents Jesus body which was broken for us. Then we the cup and drink because it represents the blood Jesus spilled for us.

Jesus also tells Peter that he will betray Christ 3 times before the rooster crows. Peter denies and said I will go with you to death.

vs 39-46 Jesus praying, knowing what was about to come about, prayed, "Father if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done." What a powerful statement. What if we all lived our lives like this? I believe we can and we should all live with this attitude.

vs 47-53 Judas kisses Jesus, which is a sign for this is the man you want to arrest. Peter takes out his sword and cuts off one of the soldiers ears. Jesus stopped the rebellion, picked up the ear and healed the man.

vs 54-62 Peter just hours after he protected Jesus with a sword, denied not knowing Jesus to a little girl. How weak is that. To someone who shows no harm, a little girl made Peter disown Christ. He again disowns Christ, and for the third time an hour later denies knowing Christ again. At that moment the rooster crowed and Peter remembers what Jesus had told him, and weeps bitterly.

vs 63-71 The guards mock Christ. Christ goes in front of Pilate and Herod. They ask him if he is the Christ. Jesus replies, "You are right in saying I am."

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Day 27

Mark 13:1-37

vs 1-31 Signs of the end to come.
1. Wars and rumors of wars.
2. Earthquakes.
3. Brother will betray brother.
4. Fathers will betray children.
5. Children will rebel against parents.
6. All men will hate you because of your faith in Jesus.

Be on your guard. Son of Man will come in the clouds. Send his angels and gather his followers. Heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will never pass a way. When Jesus says Heavens here. He means the sky, the vastness beyond in the universe. Not where we will all live with God forever.

vs 32-36  No one knows when this will happen. Do not be fooled by all the books and movies talking about when it is going to happen. Just know and prepare for Christ's return so we can spend that time in heaven with Him.

Day 26

John 11

vs 1-16 Jesus tells the disciples that he must go to Judea because Lazarus has died. The disciples try to talk him out of it because the last time Jesus was there the people tried to stone him.

vs 17-37 Jesus arrives in Judea to find out that Lazarus had been dead for 4 days. Martha blames Jesus for him dying because he was not there. Jesus responds that Lazarus will rise again. It was Jewish custom that in the last day all would  rise again. But Jesus was not referring to that. Jesus was moved by the sadness and tears that he wept himself.

vs 38-44 Jesus tells Lazarus to come out of the tomb, and of course he walks out. Praise God for miracles like this. It strengthens my faith to think about some of the things He has done.

vs 45-57 Many people chose to put there faith in Jesus. But others decided to tell the Pharisees. Caiaphas was the high priest and all the pharisees listened to him. He prophesied that Jesus would have to die, so the whole nation would not perish. So they started to plot how they could take His life.

Monday, February 1, 2010

Day 25

John 10

vs 1-6 Know who is a robber and who is a shepherd.
Shepherd
1. uses gate
2. sheep listen to his voice
3. leads them out of the pen
4. sheep follow him

Stranger/robber
1. sheep do not listen to their voice, they do not recognize it.
2. climbs over the fence

vs 7- 21   Jesus tells the disciples he is the...
1. gate- who ever enters through me will be saved- there is protection in the pen.
2. good shepherd- lays down his life for the sheep, know the sheep and they know me, listen to his voice

vs 10 "The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full." This is one of my favorite verses and one we will discuss in length in two weeks at youth group. Follow Christ and you will be able to have an abundant life. The thief is only looking for his own needs. Yet Jesus is looking out for you.

vs 22-39  This is a story extending from the first half of ch. 10. Jews ask him if he is the Christ. But he tells them that he has already told them but he did not hear Him because they are not his sheep and they did not listen to his voice. And he responds that He and the Father are one. This is blasphemous for the Jews because they do not put man as equal to God. They do not see Jesus correctly. So they pick up stones to stone him, and Jesus escapes their grasp.

vs 40-42 many believed in Jesus.

Day 24

Luke 20

vs 1-8 Jesus answers a question by asking a question. I love how he does this. He turns the attention onto them and stumps them by asking a similar question to theirs.

vs 9-19 Parable- An owner/landlord of the field send someone to collect the rent, each time the tenants beat up the people that were sent to collect the rent. Finally the owner sent his son. The tenants for some strange reason thought that if they killed the son, they would get the inheritance.  This parable is referring this story to the rejection of the capstone. He was quoting scripture from Psalm 118:22 but was referring to himself and how people have rejected him.

vs 20-26 Jesus turns another question from the Pharisees who are trying to trick him into blasphemy into a question for them. This question is about the authority of God vs. Caesar. He told them eventually to give to God what is God's and give to Caesar what is Caesar.

vs 27-39 Jesus is asked a question about marriage in heaven. He says people will neither marry nor be given in marriage in heaven.

vs 41-47 Many people try to turn their knowledge of faith into a show of long prayers, flowing robes and the important seats. Rather let us focus on God rather then men.

Friday, January 29, 2010

Day 23

Luke 19

vs 1-10 Jesus takes the time to notice Zaccheus and spends time with him at his house. With this sincere time that Jesus spends with him, Zaccheus decides to pay back the money he cheated people 4 times more the amount that he stole. Awesome, this is why Jesus came, to seek and to save the lost.

vs 11-27 Use the talents God has given you, or you will have those talents taken away and given to someone who will use them to benefit the kingdom.  Jenny's aunt used to be a great singer, one day she decided to stop singing and using her talent. She tried to go back after a long hiatus singing but realized she had lost her gift.

vs 28-44 Jesus comes into Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Great crowds praised Jesus.

vs 45-48 Jesus rebukes the people who were selling things in the temple. "This is a house of prayer."

Day 22

John 9:1-41

vs 1-12 This guy is blind not because of the sins passed down by his parents but so the work of God might be displayed in his life. Jesus then put some mud on his eyes and told the man to wash it off at the pool of Siloam. Then he was able to share with others what had happened when he was healed.

vs 13-34 Some Pharisees are mad about Jesus healing this blind guy on the Sabbath. The ask the former blind man about it. They bring in his parents to confirm it is him and that he was in fact blind. They accuse him of being a sinner, because he does not "see" things the way they do.

vs 35-41 The Pharisees are blinded by what has been truth rather then the truth that is right in front of them.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Day 21

Luke 18

More parables. I really love parables. They are stories told by Jesus that probably hit me the hardest when it comes to my faith.

vs 1-8 The story of the persistent widow is a good one. It teaches us not to give up. If she had gone to the judge once or twice she would not have received justice in her favor, but because she did not give up she eventually received what she wanted. This is not to say that God will give you every thing you want but rather not to give up when something is important to you. God hears you, and will give you what is right.

vs 9-14 The Pharisee prayer was lifting himself up, but obviously this is not the attitude of prayer that we should have. Don't lift up what you do but rather lift God up. It was not a prayer of humility. Yet the prayer by the tax collector was lowering himself to ask for forgiveness.

vs 15-17 The child is innocent and pure. There is something about faith like a child that is so fresh. We need to be able to bring children to Christ and raise them in what is right and true.  This goes for us to, we need to receive the kingdom of God just like a child would. For a child it is easy to have faith, believing what others tell them to be true.

vs 18-30 A rich ruler asks about receiving eternal life. Talks about the commandments here. And the ruler says he has kept them. But let us look at the commandments.
#7. do not commit adultery
#6. do not murder
#8. do not steal
#9. do not lie
#5. honor you father and mother.
All of these have to do with your relationship between other people. Look at the ones left out.
#1. Have no other God's before me.
#2. Do not make yourself an idol.
#3. Do not misuse the name of the Lord.
#4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
#10. Do not covet.
All of these commandments except the last one have to do with the relationship you have with God. These are the ones that God wants us to remember. But if you look at the 10 commandments they can all filter through our relationship with God and people.

Jesus replies to the ruler. Sell everything you have and give to the poor. Then come and follow me. When the ruler heard this he went away sad. The ruler was not willing to give everything up to follow Christ. Following Christ is the first and foremost thing that he wants from us.

vs 31-34 Jesus predicts his death and the disciples struggle to understand what he means by this.

vs 35-43 A blind man begs for Jesus to heal him. Yelling out with all his might to be saved from his blindness. He had obviously heard of Christ and his healing power before. So he did everything he could for Jesus to hear him. And Jesus did in fact heal him.

Day 20

Luke 17

When you are finished with this bible reading you are 2/3 of the way done. What are you learning? What is God teaching you? I want to hear what you think.

vs 1-4 DO NOT CAUSE OTHERS TO SIN. This is a powerful statement. Do not lead astray. Help lead people in the right direction. If your brother sins (brother means someone who is in the faith) rebuke  him and help him.

vs 5-10 The disciples ask for an increased faith. What a question to ask for. I hope each one of you pray this prayer every day of your lives. This is one of the things I ask for daily. As we face temptation, as we struggle with what life throws at us we need to not only hold on to our faith but have our faith increased to get through them.

vs 11-19 Gratitude and  thankfulness is something we need to have more of. It was the case back then too. Only one of ten people went back to thank Jesus for their powerful story of healing. We need to learn to be thankful for all God has done in our lives.

vs 20-37 We need to be the kingdom of God to everyone we come into contact with. It is not our life to live. The sooner we come to that conclusion, we can come to realize that we have nothing to lose.

Day 19

John 8

This is a really interesting passage. Do your bibles say that the first part of this passage was not included in earlier manuscripts? "That is, the earliest Greek manuscripts, the earliest translations and the earliest church fathers all lack reference to this story. Furthermore, some manuscripts place it at other points within John (after 7:36, 7:44 or 21:25), others include it in the Gospel of Luke (placing it after Luke 21:38), and many manuscripts have marks that indicate the scribes "were aware that it lacked satisfactory credentials" (Metzger 1994:189). Furthermore, it contains many expressions that are more like those in the Synoptic Gospels than those in John." (http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/commentaries/IVP-NT/John/Jesus-Forgives-Woman-Taken)

vs 1-11 A woman caught in adultery brought before Jesus by the Pharisees. It was written in the law of Moses that you would stone a woman for this. They were asking him about this because they wanted to trap him. But I hope by this point that you know enough about Jesus that he did not fall for it. Jesus bent over and wrote something in the sand. Jesus said, "if any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." The sluggishly left one at a time knowing they were not in the position to judge. Jesus would have been the only one that fit that description, but he did not condemn her as well. But he added onto it to "leave your life of sin."

No one I know is in the position to condemn. Jesus could have but felt that grace and love were more important. But with the grace he also wanted to see transformation in her life. He wanted her to change her ways.

vs 12-30 Jesus says, I know who I am. I can appear as my own witness. I know where I came from and where I am going. You judge by human standards. I also have the witness of my Father. "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be."

Jesus never really comes out and says who He is. In a way it is really cool, He has all the power and authority He needs but never really broadcasts it... at least not yet, it is just not time.

vs 31-41 "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." It is interesting how many people use the second part of this  verse to set their own agenda. But if you look at the context of the two verses together we find out the truth is God's teaching. This freedom that Jesus is talking about is freedom from sin.

vs 42-47 Jesus is talking about the lying deceiving ways of the devil. Even though these people claim that God is their only Father. Jesus tells them that they belong to the devil rather to God.

vs 48-59 The Pharisees accused Jesus of being a Samaritan and demon possessed. Remember last week I told you that Samaritans were looked down upon. Well this is proof. The Pharisees ask Jesus who He is. Jesus responds by, "I cannot glorify myself, my Father glorifies me. before Abraham was born, I Am." This the Pharisees took as ultimate blasphemy. They picked up rocks to stone him but Jesus hid and slipped away.

Day 18

Luke 16

vs 1-14 A debt collector found out that he was really close to losing his job. Because his skills lacked in other areas he knew that he should brown nose the potential employers that might higher him after losing his job. So as a debt collector he went around and made deals to cancels their debts if they could make just a portion of the payment. His master commended him for what he did. In our lives we have to earn the trust. We should not feel that we are owed it. When we try to serve two desires one is left lacking trust in the other. Decide who you will serve God or money.

vs 15-18 The law will never change. We are trying to force it to fit our own desires. But it will only deceive ourselves if we think we have any bearing on changing the law to fit ourselves. This is what people have been trying to do with divorce. They are trying to find reasons why it is okay.

vs 19-31 Two people died, one a beggar and the other a rich man. The rich man went to hell and was in a terrible torment. The rich man asked Abraham to have Lazarus come over and dip his hand in the water and touch his tongue with it. He was obviously in a horrible place, we wanted to be cooled by just a drop of water.  Since this could not happen the rich man asked Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brother of this horrible place. Abraham told him if they already do not believe Moses and the Prophets, even someone rising from the dead will not help.

Day 17

I love parables. We can learn so much from them about how we should live.
vs 1-7 Lost sheepIf a shepherd loses a sheep they would go to search for the sheep. The same way we should approach someone who is lost and does not know Christ. Or someone who might have attended youth group at a time but has stopped attending for some reason. We need to do whatever we can so as many people as possible can know Christ.
vs 8-10 Lost costThe same as the sheep, the coin is valuable to us but our focus needs to be on the lost person. They are worth so much more in eternity than the coin.
vs 11-32 Lost Son (also know as prodigal son)One son asks for his share of the estate. This is a kick to the gut of the Father because this means the son is saying I would rather you die and I have this money. This is the only way someone would traditionally receive an inheritance.
The son went off and squandered the wealth on wild living. When he had nothing he got a job feeding pigs. Which for a Jewish person this was the lowest position seen. He became so hungry that he longed to eat what the pigs ate. He came to his senses and said he could at least have a better life working for his father. So he returned home. When his father so him from a long distance away he started running to him and embraced his son and kissed him. He threw a party in his honor. His brother however saw this and was mad because he had followed the rules. The father responded by saying everything i have is yours. Celebrate and be glad.So after reading the bullet points of this story, who do you think is the lost son?

Day 16

If you have made it to day 16, you have already accomplished half of the challenge. Congratulations you are doing awesome. I hope you are learning a lot. I know I am.

vs 1-11 Jesus asks two questions of the Pharisees. They remain silent not knowing how to answer the questions. When invited to a wedding feast take the least important seat and be invited up to a more important seat rather then taking the important seat and being asked to move. It would be embarrassing.

vs 12-24 A man had a great banquet but many people had excuses on why they could not make it. So he invited the poor, the crippled, the blind to enjoy the feast. Most took it for granted but those who have been oppressed were grateful for the opportunity.

vs 25-35 Cost of a disciple.
1. Compared to your love for Christ you should hate your family, even yourself.
2. Carry the cross, bear His burdens.
3. Give up everything to be His disciple
4. Stay salty.

Day 15

Matthew 7

Sermon on the Mount Part 3

vs 1-6 We need to be careful about judging. It is so easy to do, yet we do not always realize that we are doing it. Our own brokenness keeps up from telling other people how they need to change. We think we are doing someone else some good but are judging others when we are messed up.

vs 7-12
1. Ask- if you do not know ask. If you ask you receive.
2. Seek- keep searching, and you will find.
3. Knock- the door will not be opened unless you knock.
Some struggle with faith, this is why it is important for us to continue to ask for our faith strengthened and to seek encouragement so the door will be opened. Faith is grown by our actions and what we put into it we will receive from it.

vs 13-14 Walk through the small gate and narrow path. It leads to life.

vs 15-23 As followers of Christ we need to bear good fruit.  This is the will of the Father. For more on fruit see Galatians 5:22-23.

vs 24-29  Put God's word into practice. We need to build our foundation of life from Scripture. We would be foolish not to.

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Day 14

Matthew 6

vs 1-4 Do not be boastful about giving to the needy. This should be a humble act.

vs 5-15 Do not pray for recognition, but do it in private just between you and God. Some people pray with big Christianese words to impress other people but this is not the goal of prayer. Prayer is for us to show our love for God. Jesus then takes the time to show us how to pray. By now you know this as the Lord's prayer. It is something we pray as a congregation every week, because it covers every area.

1. it lifts up God.
2. shows intentions of bringing his kingdom to earth.
3. praying His will and not our own.
4. giving us what we need to survive.
5. asking for forgiveness.
6. keeping us out of the places of temptation.

vs 16-18 Fasting is a discipline that keeps us focused on God. We separate from normality in life, of food, tv, video games and other things, to use the time for worship. Do not go around telling everyone you fast, this is not the purpose of fasting. Just like giving to the needy, and prayer it is something you should keep between you and God.

vs 19-24 We all own things that we treasure. But how much should we stake out lives on this. The things we own today in a few years will be obsolete and fading. We will not be able to take anything with us. The things we treasure show us our true heart. No one can serve two masters. They could contradict each other  and then who would you follow then?

vs 25-34 Do not worry. It does not do any good. But seek first God's kingdom and all the things most people worry about will be given to you.

Day 13

Matthew 5

Sermon on the Mount part 1

The next three days we will be reading the most famous sermon of all time. This passage has a lot of practical living advice. It calls us to a higher standard in many areas of life.

vs 1-12 The Beatitudes
We covered the beatitudes the other day. But I will address them a little more. These little phrases might seem confusing to you because who says "blessed are the poor in spirit?" It does not seem normal too us. This is a bit of a paradox. A paradox is something that seems contradicting. We are told the blessed ones are the ones with all the money, power, toys and other material positions. These phrases show us the type God is looking for. When you are able to survive and thrive in your faith it is because you rely and depend upon God for your strength. Those who feel they have it all together do not rely on God as much as the poor in spirit, the mournful, the meek, the hungry,  and so on.

vs 13-16
Salt enhances flavor, salt is also a preservative. We need to be the salt to enhance the name of Christ. Preserve it so the name of Christ will live on in our and future generations. Light over cedes darkness. We need to spread the light to overtake the darkness in the world.

vs 17-20
The law will not be abolished. Meaning what was written through scriptures is still valid today. Jesus is the fulfillment of the law which will be an enhancing of scripture. Everywhere from the law that is seen in the first five books of the Old Testament, to the prophecies of Christ.

vs 21-26 Murder
Every one knows murder is wrong, and I hope most of you do not struggle with this sin. However anyone who is angry with a brother or calls his brother a fool will be in danger of murder. It calls us to a new level of love.

vs 27-30 Adultery
Anyone who looks lustfully at a woman is subject to adultery. It is not just about cheating physically but cheating with your heart. It would be better to gouge out your eye then for your whole body to be thrown into hell. This probably should not be taken literally. But take whatever steps necessary to love Christ more and sin less.

vs 31-32 Divorce
Divorce should be the last option taken. It is only okay in marital unfaithfulness. Even though it is not implied here I would also go with abuse as being part of the unfaithfulness. Divorce is difficult and affects a lot more then just the couple involved.

vs 33-37 Trustworthy
Be a man or woman of your word.

vs 38-42 More then required
1. Turn the other cheek... let him slap the other as well. We should not retaliate in a way that the world does. Yet another level of love.
2. If someone forces you to walk go one mile, go two. The phrase "go the extra mile," comes from this. When this was preached Romans had power in Israel and would seldom ask someone to carry his stuff up to a mile. It was even a law that required them to do it. So when a soldier asked them to do it, it was almost a slap in the face to go two miles.

vs 43-48 Love your enemies
A new level of love is shown here. Neighbor also includes enemy. We learned this when we read the Good Samaritan. Because they were not the nicest of friends.

This chapter is closed to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. What do you think about this phrase? Is it possible to be perfect?

Day 12

Luke 10:1-42

vs 1-17 Sending out of 72 disciples to spread the word. This verse addresses the need for workers in the harvest. The harvest that is referred to in this passage is for souls. We have heard Jesus refer to this as "fishers of men" as well.
some tips for Jesus
1. do not take anything with you
2. live off of people of peace in order to spread the word
3. if you are not welcomed kick the dust off of your feet and leave.
The disciples return from their journey with joy.

vs 18-20 Jesus addresses those who return. This authority comes from me.

vs 21-22 Full of joy, Jesus prays

vs 23-24 Jesus says to disciples, You are lucky for seeing what you have seen.

Good Samaritan
vs 25-28 Expert of law asks Jesus "what must I do to have have eternal life?" I like Jesus response of this. He answers with a question. "How do you read it?"
The answer is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. And to Love your neighbor as yourself." This is what you must do to have eternal life. This is why it is the greatest commandment.

vs 29-37 But the guy was still confused and asked, "who is my neighbor?" Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan. Now remember last week when we read the story about Jesus helping out the woman at the well. She was also a Samaritan. Jewish people and Samaritans did not get along. So it makes this story even more powerful.

A man was beat up and robbed and left him for dead. Three people passed him in the road.
1. A Priest saw him and crossed the road to avoid him in his path.
2. A Levite saw him and did the same thing as the priest. A levite was one who would assist a priest in the religious duties of the church. So both people were highly involved in the church but ignored the guy who was beat up on the side of the road.
3. A Samaritan walked buy and saw a man who was injured. Took pity on him and helped. He bandaged his wounds, took him to an inn to take care of him. What an amazing story of charity and helping a stranger.
A neighbor is not someone you live next door to. It is anybody and everybody. There is an old song. "They will know we are Christians by our love."  Let us live it out.

vs 38-42 Jesus at the house of Mary and Martha
1. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus listening to Him.
2. Martha served around the house trying to take care of Jesus. But it says Martha was distracted. She had Jesus there at her side. She wanted Mary to help her. Jesus tried to calm her down by saying "Mary, has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away."

I think this is a great story to wrap up the reading right after the Good Samaritan. Many people get blind sided by the idea of serving and loving neighbor that at times we forget the first part of the command to Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength." Do not get distracted by what you do. But remember first and foremost who you are; A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST.

Day 11

Mark 8:1-38

vs 1-13 With 7 loaves of bread and a few fish Jesus fed 4000 people. This is a crazy amount of people to feed with such a low amount of food. People just didnt take a bite and pass it along. That would have still been 4000 bites of food. If you read vs 8 each person was satisfied after the meal. The ate until they were hungry no longer.

Yesterday I had 4 people over at the house watching a football game. We consumed two large pizzas. I find myself eating substantial amounts of food on my own. God is a God of miracles.

vs 14-21 God will be more than sufficient for all your needs. He will provide for you whatever it might be that you need. In both cases of the feeding of the 5000 and the 4000 they ended up with more food after they ate then when they started eating. That my friend is a miracle.

vs 22-26 Jesus heals a man with spit. It might seem gross but hey it worked. If you were blind and it gave you a chance to see I think you would risk it. It is definitely a lot cheaper then eye care today. Then Jesus heals the man so he can see clearly. A powerful healing from the Christ.

vs 27-30 Jesus asks two questions
1. Who do people say I am- John the Baptist, Elijah, another prophet.
2. Who do you say I am- Peter answers, "You  are the Christ."

I wonder who you might say Jesus is? Who is Christ in your life? And how has this changed you?

vs 31-38 Jesus predicts that He will die and rise again in three days. Peter had a problem with this and Jesus rebuked him for it, even called him Satan. The death and the resurrection was God's plan to bring salvation to the people and Peter did not want this to happen. But it must. Jesus then challenged each disciple to take up his own cross and follow Him.  To save your life you must lose your life. This is a total transformation of giving your life to Christ and asking him to lead and guide you in your journey with him.

Day 10

Luke 7

Looks like I read day 10 yesterday. So today I will go back to complete day 9.

Faith of the centurion
vs 1-10 This story of healing is really cool because the centurion has faith that Jesus can heal from a long distance. This is awesome faith who Jesus said he had never found faith like this in all of Israel. And of course Jesus healed him.

It is amazing how God hardly ever repeats miracles in scripture. This shows God's versatility and His power in many ways. Never underestimate how God can work in your life.

vs 11-17 Jesus raises another dead person to life. And people were in awe and praised God. God wants to be praised so when Good things happend we should answer in worship.

vs 18-33 People continue to ask to see if Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus talks about how peoples perception is not always what it seems about the person.

Jesus Anointed by a sinful woman
vs 36-50 A woman cleans Jesus feet with tears and expensive perfume as an act of worship.
Jesus talks about forgiveness and those who have been forgiven much have a lot to be thankful for. This gift was amazing and I do not want to take it for granted. Jesus forgave her sins and tells her to go in peace.

What an amazing story of worship and gratefulness.

Day 9

Luke 8

vs 1-15 Different outcomes of the seed and where it is planted.
1. Along a path- birds came and ate it up... ones who hear but the devil distracts the Word from there hearts.
2. Rock- it grew but was never able to take root... receive the word, believe for a while but fall away eventually.
3. Among thorns- grew but eventually choked out... they receive the word but are choked by life's worries and pleasures. Never mature.
4. Good soil- grew immensely... Hear the word, retain it and live it.

It is not enough just to read the bible, live it out, let it change your heart!

vs 16-18 Let others see the light. Be real.

vs 19-21 Put into practice the word of God.

vs 22-25 Have faith in God, He was there for the disciples in the storm. The winds and waves obey Him.

vs 26-39 Heal a demon possessed man, by casting the evil spirits into a heard of pigs. The pigs go crazy and run into the lake and drown. This scared the people and they asked Jesus to leave. The guy who Jesus healed wanted to go with Him, but Jesus told him to go home and show what God had done for him.

vs 40-53
Jairus asks Jesus to heal his daughter. While on the way there was a thick crowd of people, as Jesus walked through the crowd he felt someone  touch him. Power escaped him. He asked who touched him and she fell at his feet and told him of her healing that had happened when she touched him. While this was happening someone told Jairus his daughter had died. Jesus told Jairus not to worry and that his daughter would be healed. When they arrived at the house only Jesus and Peter, John and James went into the girls room with the parents. Jesus said, "She is not dead, but asleep. My Child get up!" and told them to get her something to eat.

The power of Christ can heal disease and death. Put your faith in him.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Day 8

Luke 6

vs 1-11 Pharisees are always questioning Jesus about the Old Testament rules. Jesus uses other stories to help with his reasoning for picking grain on the Sabbath. On another day while in the temple Jesus saw a man whose right hand was crippled. The Pharisees were thinking about whether or not Jesus would heal this man on. Jesus again knew what they were thinking and brought the man up in front of everybody and asked a question. "Is it better to do good or evil?" And healed the man's hand.

vs 12-16 Jesus went out to pray at the mountainside. If we are to model the lifestyle of Christ. We too should pray often. Jesus wanted to connect with his Father. Just as we should want to connect with Him.

vs 17-26 The Beatitudes (also read Matthe 5:3-12)
Great miracles were happening because people humbled themselves and followed after Jesus to be healed from things they had no control of. Blessed is the poor (in Spirit), hungry, weep, when you are hated, reject you. All these thing will pass. This is why they are blessings, because you will eventually get through them. The other side can make you comfortable. While this side will help you lean on God and in the end be blessed.

vs 27-36 LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.
1. If one slaps you, (turn the cheek), this means for you to allow him to slap you on the other cheek.
2. Give to everyone who asks.
3. Golden rule- Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Even if they are not treating you the way that they should.
4. Loving people who love you is easy.
5. Be merciful as our Father is merciful.

vs 37-42
1. Do not judge, condemn.
2. Do forgive, give
3. Do not judge something in someone else life, because what you are doing is wrong as well.

vs 43-45
Christian bear good fruit, meaning peoples lives and hearts will be changing around you because of your changed heart.

vs 46-49
Be smart about what you build your faith upon. If it is not the right foundation it will fall flat.
